Is it ok to only invite out of town guests and distant relatives to the wedding and not the engagement party?

I would like to invite everyone to the engagement, but, then, it would be as big as the wedding! I am inviting close family and friends to the engagement and distant relatives and out of town guests to the wedding only, plus everyone at the engagement party,is invited to the wedding, is this ok?

I am puzzled by your question. Is your engagement party the night before the wedding or something? Are your distant relatives and out of town friends so wonderfully fond of you that they would travel to your engagement party, and then a year or so later travel again for your wedding? I think that for the engagement, the guest list should be limited to people who are very close to you indded or those who are nearby and see you often. No matter it is the furthest thing from your own mind, when people receive invitations to anything connected to a wedding or marriage their first thought is often "Well, they are shaking us down for an extra gift."
Reply:Yes, that's totally fine. Out-of-town guests will not expect to invited to any local events (parties, showers, etc).

What IS rude is to invite people to a shower or engagement party and then NOT invite them to the wedding. It's like saying, "I want you to buy me a present but I don't like you enough to want you at my wedding."

So your plan sounds perfect.
Reply:not only is that fine, its most likely more preferable. inviting out of towners to an engagement party and wedding puts them up for twice the travel time, costs and gifts; its better just to have immediates and close by people to the engagement party
Reply:Yes, it is fine. Although I think it is pretty much understood that most out of towners would not attend the engagement party even if they were invited...considering the time and money involved.
